Prepare a handover someone else can use

Walkthrough notes for organising files, ownership and next steps at the end of a project.

List the deliverables

Create an inventory of final outputs, editable sources and documentation. Identify any draft or unused material so it cannot be confused with approved work. File names should help a new person find the relevant asset.

Document the dependencies

Record the platforms, fonts, plugins or services needed for the work. Explain any recurring costs or accounts that belong to the client. Share access through an agreed secure method rather than placing credentials in a general handover document.

Explain routine changes

Show how the owner can update common content or perform a simple maintenance task. A concise guide with the most relevant steps is often more useful than a long document that does not match the actual setup.

Agree what happens next

State the support period if one has been agreed, who receives questions and what would count as new work. A handover is complete when the recipient understands both how to use the output and where responsibility now sits.

Put it into practice

  • Separate final and editable files.
  • Document dependencies and ownership.
  • State the agreed support boundaries.
