Make a website easier to explore before adding more pages

Walkthrough notes for examining navigation, page purpose and the next step.

Look through a new visitor’s eyes

Start with the homepage and write down what the business offers without using information from elsewhere. If the range is unclear, improve the explanation before adding decorative sections. A visitor should not need to guess the vocabulary of the business to use search.

Group around visitor needs

Organise services or products into categories that help someone decide where to go. Labels should be understandable without internal company knowledge. A category page should explain the group and point to meaningful details, not simply repeat the homepage.

Give every page a job

For each page, write its audience, the question it answers and the next step. A service detail page might explain scope and preparation; a resource page might answer a practical question and lead to a related service. Remove links that do not serve a clear purpose.

Test the route

Follow a realistic task from the homepage to its destination on a small screen. Check labels, text size, form instructions and the ability to return. Treat the observation as a design check; do not claim improved conversion until you have evidence from actual use.

Put it into practice

  • Describe the offer using only the first screen.
  • Map one visitor journey with a clear destination.
  • Review that journey on a narrow screen.
